Minotaur Sculpture

Lotus Arts de Vivre’s artists immediately recognized the primal qualities of the large Teak wood trunk from which they created “The Minotaur,” a contemporary rendition of this mythological Greek beast. The natural shape of this single piece of wood was used to form the main structure of this powerful, mythical beast. The hair, horn, head, mouth, leg and foot were then covered with gold leaf and attached to the torso of the sculpture. It took 15 craftsmen more than a year to complete this large sculpture.

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man or, as described by a famous Roman poet, "part man and part bull". He dwelt at the center of the Cretan Labyrinth, which was an elaborate maze-like construction designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus, on the command of King Minos of Crete. The Minotaur was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus.
